The links below will take you to scenes of the earliest years when, under the ownership of the Chicago Daily News, it broadcast from studios in Chicago's La Salle Hotel (and later the "new" Daily News Building at 400 West Madison).

• Freeman Gosden and Charles Correll in 1929. They were radio's "Amos 'n' Andy". And this is a photo you should take note of.
• Beatrice Lilly in the WMAQ studios in 1928. Stylishly dressed and quaffed.
• Jackie Coogan in the WMAQ studios in 1923. Long before he was "Uncle Fester" he was known as "The Kid".
• Donald Weller, WMAQ's first engineer. Batteries were included in those days. Lots of them.
• Hal Totten at Wrigley Field. He was WMAQ's first sportscaster.
• Hal Totten at Comiskey Park. He did heavy time in the South Side booth as well.
• Hal Totten doing the pre-game show. And that's Ty Cobb he's interviewing!
• Otis Skinner visits WMAQ in 1923. The great actor steps off stage and before the microphone.
• Russell Pratt and Ransom Sherman. They were WMAQ regulars.
• The "Three Doctors". They practiced comedy without a license.
• Georgene Faulkner. Known as the "Story Lady", she provided entertainment for the kiddies.
• The Whitney Trio. Chamber music, anybody?
• The mighty Western Electric 6A transmitter. Installed in late 1925, it boosted WMAQ's power to a whopping thousand watts!
• The even mightier Western Electric 104-B transmitter. Installed in 1928, it pumped out a fully-modulated five thousand watt signal.
• The WMAQ antenna in 1922. High atop the La Salle Hotel.
• The WMAQ antenna and transmitter plant in 1928. Located in suburban Elmhurst, the new transmission facility provided far more effective coverage of metropolitan Chicago.
