The 1934 WLS Family Album

Curator's note: Beautiful cover art and great photographs characterize the edition of the WLS family album celebrating the station's tenth anniversary. Below are links to highlights featuring some of the Prairie Farmer station's best-known artists.

George Gobel (at age fourteen, long before he became an Emmy-award winning television performer.
Gene Autry. Back in the days when he was "Oklahoma Yodeling Cowboy".
Red Foley and Eva Overstake. A love story that turned sour.
Lulu Belle. One of at least two WLS personalities who entered politics (can you guess who the other was?).
Scott Wiseman. Lulu Bell's spouse. The "Lulu Belle and Scotty" team was a big WLS (and National Barndance) draw for close to three decades.
Patsy Montana and the Praries Ramblers. Patsy was the sweatheart of innumerable cowboys and city slickers as well. We should all be so lucky as to have the Ramblers as our backup group.
The Westerners. A group that appealed to far more than a country audience.
Joe Kelly. "Jolly Joe" kept 'em smiling on radio and television for more than a quarter century.
The Girls of the Golden West. No, they weren't from Muleshoe, Texas.
Grace Wilson. The "Girl with a Million Friends."
The Ridge Runners. Managed by John Lair, one of the greatest preservers and promoters of the music of the mountains.
Jim Poole. The reporter who always took a cattle prod to work.
Arkie (Luther Ossenbrink). A thirty-year veteran of the Prairie Farmer station.
Dixie Mason. Her real name was Mildred.
Hank and Hiram. The Kansas Cut-Ups.
The Melody Men. Phil Kalar et al.
Prairie Home. A landlocked Lake Woebegon?
Tom and Don. Tom Dix and Doyne Wilson.
