The
1934 WLS Family Album:
The Girls of the Golden West
Curator's
note: The country legend that the Good sisters were born in Muleshoe,
Texas, was apparently spawned in the 1933 WLS Family Album. Mildred (1913-1993)
and Dorothy (1915-1967) were actually natives of Mount Carmel, Illinois.Their
first radio performances were on WIL in Saint Louis and on Mexican border-blaster
XER. They supposedly took the name of their group from the common English translation
of the name of Puccini's opera, La Fanciulla del West. |

Mildred
and Dorothy Good, the Girls of the Golden West, present a pleasing type of harmony
and novel arrangements of old-time range country songs as well as modern numbers.
They came to work at WLS after work in St. Louis and on a Mexican station. They
have been featured on the National Barn Dance and on the regular WLS broadcasts.
You may be glad to know the name of town near where they were born---Muleshoe,
Texas. |
