"Arkie"...
Curator's
note: "Arkie" fans may also wish to see him featured in the
1934, 1941
and 1954 WLS Family Almbums |

The Arkansas Woodchopper
has been called "Arkie" so long that even his closest friends have almost
forgotten his real name (Luther Ossenbrink). Native of the Ozark Mountains, he
actually has chopped wood, and "rode leather all day long."
Why does Arkie laugh right out in the middle of a song? We're sorry we can't show
you movies of the real reasons.
Imagine the Maple City Four down
on all fours like a drove of pigs, and Ralph
Emerson waving his arms and chasing them right in front of Arkie. You'd laugh
too. |
At the Illinois
State Fair folks came in at five o'clock in the morning to watch the program as
well as listen to it. This picture (at the right), with Arkie in the middle, was
taken at seven o'clock in the morning as the boys were going out to breakfast. |

The picture at
the left was taken in the Prairie Farmer tent at the Indiana State Fair. Many
thousands of our friends were there, and Arkie and the others are still talking
about the good times they had. |
