The 1954 WLS Family Album:

Martha Crane Celebrates 25 Years in Radio

Curator's note: Martha Crane was one of WLS radio's most durable personalities. She continued on the air for a time after ABC took over programming of WLS in 1960. You can also see her listed among the WLS announcers in 1932.

Twenty-five years ago, Martha Crane began working in the WLS mail room. Before long she was assistant to the household editor on Homemaker's Hour, later took charge of it. In 1935, when Feature Foods started, Martha became its director-announcer. Now 19 years later, this half hour program continues a top favorite. In addition to latest news of foods and homemaking, interviews with people from every walk of life, listeners enjoy Martha's friendly chats about her family. She married her childhood sweetheart in 1929. Next to Ray is Crane with his pet "kitty". He is a freshman at Iowa Weslyan College in Mt. Pleasant, Martha and Ray's home town. Barry is a Highland Park High School freshman.
