Curator's note: This video by Rich Samuels originally aired on the "Chicago Tonight" program on WTTW as part of the "Chicago Stories" series. It may be instructive to view this video in light of the ongoing turmoil at the Tribune Company under the chairmanship of Sam Zell (its posting comes four days after the resignation of Tribune Company CEO Randy Michaels). Featured in this video are Richard Norton Smith, biographer of Colonel McCormick, and Dick Ciccone, former Chicago Tribune managing editor. Note that one of the Colonel's paramours was a WGN radio employee, and that the Tribune engages in something resembling a Wikileaks effort during World War II. Should you wonder, the music at the beginning of the video is from Igor Stravinski's "Histoire du Soldat" ("The Soldier's Tale"). |
