Cow Power
December 16 2008

Curator's note: This video by Rich Samuels first aired on WTTW's "Chicago Tonight" program on September 16, 2008 as part of the "Chicago Matters" series "Moving Forward". Shot on the Hunter Haven dairy farm of Tom and Doug Block in Carroll County, Illinois, it features a methane digester system which converts the animals' manure into electrical power which is consumed on the farm (with any residue sold to Commonwealth Edison). The concept of a "Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation" or "CAFO" remains controversial, focusing at present on the much larger operation A.J. Bos of California wants to build in Jo Daviess County.
